How to cure a cold in 3 days

I went to bed last night with a scratchy throat and I woke up this morning with a pounding headache, swollen tonsils, runny nose and a scratchy throat. Great.

I have 3 days to get better. Surgery day is on the 4th day at 6:45 am.

I am sitting in my bed all bundled up and drinking lots of fluids. I am not allowed to take anything 'herbal' according to the hospital people, as that may interfere with the anesthetic. So that leaves what? Drugs?

I am drinking some romanian concoction that my mom made and brought over, 'sure to make me feel better soon' but in the meantime, if anyone has anything that is tried and true, let me know.

The last thing I'd want is to have my surgery postponed because I'm sick.

Using a Neti Pot can help... It's a nasal rinse with tepid water and saline. Just make sure to keep your mouth open and breathe through your mouth - I never feel like they emphasize that enough in the instructions!

Hot tea, chicken noodle soup and lots of sleep.

That's all I've got on the natural way to speed up on the course of a cold. I hope you feel better VERY soon!

Thanks Sayre - I will try that. (although it sounds gross, just for the record) Lol.

Just saw your comment on cancerspot.org - here are some great resources to connect to other men and women with breast cancer:

http://bit.ly/gU7vAf This directs you to the Gilda's Clubs in Canada where you can find great networking and support opportunities.

http://bit.ly/gAjMrG And this one addresses questions you may have about treatment decisions, how best to communicate with your healthcare team, how to stay active, and in general how to deal with the cancer related stress.

I hope these links help and your cold goes away fast!

Best wishes,
Lauren

Okay, this works really well for most colds, but most people are unable to actually do it. Gargle with salt water morning, noon and night. Drink orange juice and water, and plenty of them, the last thing you have to do is sleep. No watching t.v., no reading, no nothing. Don't allow your body to expend any energy on anything other than fighting this bug. Most people can't just lie in bed and do nothing, but really, sleep is your best weapon. It allows your body to focus all its energy and weapons on the bug. My partner has had a cold since before Christmas. She would not take enough time to rest. The minute I felt it coming on, I stayed in bed for the day. I have a schedule that allows it, now you do too. Anyway, I was over the very same cold she still has in 3-5 days.

Oh, just looked at Sayre's post. Yep, the netty pot works, I just can't stand salt water up my nose. Most people can't which is why I didn't recommend it, but hey, if you've got the constitution for it, salt water however you can get it in, throat or nose is good. Salt works on bacterias and viruses the same way it does on meat when you use salt to tenderize meat. It breaks a disulphide bond in the organism, weakening it. At least that's what my molecular cellular biology prof told me in college.

Lauren - thanks for the tip. I will check it out.

Tweets - I like honey and lemon too, I've been doing lots of that

VV - thanks hun. I think sleep is the best medicine. Funny, I always thought watching tv, or resting on the couch also counted but after reading your post, I went back to bed. This morning I feel better, but not yet great. But better is a whole lot better than yesterday!
